桂河大桥

二战期间，日军占领了缅甸边境的一个战俘营。出于战略需要，日军将在缅甸与泰国交界修建一条大桥，同时希望战俘营里战俘出力，但英军战俘代表尼科森上校（亚利克·基尼斯 Alec Guinness 饰）认为这违反日内瓦公约拒不执行。于是尼科森等人被关了禁闭，但是没了尼科森的带领， 战俘们表现消极，而且因日本设计方面的不足，建桥工作陷入了停滞。日军无奈只好放出了尼科森等人，获释后尼科森感到在破坏一切的战争里何不做点建设，于是开始投入到建桥的工作。与此同时，逃出去的美军俘虏希尔兹（威廉•霍尔登 William Holden 饰）接受盟军一个特别任务，就是大桥建成之日将它炸毁。

辉雄（小衫勇 饰）因为家境过于贫寒，而被父亲过继给了贵族武士大和严（早川雪洲 饰）做养子，大和严膝下有一女光子（原节子 饰），两人顺水推舟的结下了娃娃亲。之后，辉雄被大和严送往了德国留学，第一次接触到异国文化的他很快就被这片自由奔放的土地所吸引，与此同时，辉雄还结识了名为盖尔达（露丝·埃韦勒 Ruth Eweler 饰）的德国记者，美艳的盖尔达一下子就吸引了辉雄的注意，令他将还在家中苦苦等他回来完婚的光子抛之脑后。　　回到日本之后，辉雄决定同光子解除婚约，心碎欲绝的光子穿上了原本打算在婚礼上穿着的嫁衣，一路往富士山奔去，想要结束自己悲催的一生。
